Spanish 4th and 5th Graders Travel to Spain

Map of SpainDMIS’ Spanish 4th and 5th graders will study abroad in Paracuelles, Spain from May 2 – 17. DMIS is the only private school in Denver that offers study abroad opportunities for elementary students. The students will live with host families and attend the Rodriguez de Celis school, where DMIS Spanish teacher Luis Diaz was once a student! The DMIS students will attend a science camp for three days with the local Spanish students in the Picos de Europa mountain range, where they will study astronomy, geology, visit an artisan cheese factory and go hiking through the mountains. During their two weeks in the Cantabria region of northern Spain, they will also visit castles, neighboring Celtic towns, the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao and other educational destinations. Check out their Travel Diary on the Student Travel page.

While the French 5th graders have been traveling to France for 12 years, this is the first year the Spanish program will send the older elementary students abroad. Next year, DMIS will send the Chinese 5th grade class to China for the first time. Allowing DMIS students to study abroad at the end of their elementary school career is so important because they become physically immersed in the language and culture they have been academically immersed in the classroom for the last 8 years. It is a wonderful culmination of their educational experience at DMIS.
